The fire at Niš Fortress is not artificial intelligence
At a pre-election rally of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) in Niš, Serbia, on the evening of 5 October 2026, flares and fireworks set the grass, vegetation and the rampart of the historic Fortress on fire. Two days later it was said on television that the videos were “artificial intelligence”. Here is all the available evidence — with posting times anyone can check.
Conclusion
Fabricating these videos with AI tools within the observed time window is practically impossible:
the fire was filmed from at least three different positions, the first two angles were posted 2 min apart,
posting times are written by the platforms’ servers, firefighters confirmed the fire, and the prosecutor qualified it as a criminal offence.
Every claim carries an exhibit ID (e.g. S-01), a source and an access date.

Five things to know
- The first video was posted at 19:30:02, from position “A — Embankment, east of the Fortress Bridge” (S-01). By 19:32:02 a video from position “B — Fortress Bridge and King Milan Square” had been posted (S-02). In total the fire was filmed from at least three different positions (S-07). The sightlines of all 18 videos intersect at one point on the southern rampart of the Fortress, within ±15 m — from different places they all film the same flames. The author of the video from the crowd also showed the original in their phone gallery, with the recording time “Monday · 19:26” (S-18).
- Posting times cannot be backdated. X and Instagram servers write the moment of posting into the post’s ID number; so it cannot be shifted back later (details). None of the X posts was edited afterwards.
- The fire was confirmed even by those denying it. Firefighters to N1 (M-05), the prosecutor — Art. 278 Criminal Code (P-07), soot found by the police investigation (P-03), and even “the Fortress did not burn” articles that admit vegetation burned and firefighters put it out (P-12, P-13). The same speaker who said “that’s artificial intelligence” admits: “They did light flares” (I-01).
- AI cannot make this in 2 min. Tools work clip by clip, inventing a different fire every time. A consistent multi-angle set realistically takes 1–3 days (AI analysis).
- Traces were removed before the investigation. Although the prosecutor had ordered police to guard the scene overnight (P-04), the area was cleaned and ploughed before 7 a.m. (P-01, P-02). The legal analysis covers that whole chain.
